Second World War

20 questions · History

On 1 September 1939 Germany invaded Poland and thus unleashed the Second World War; the most devastating war in history, which would cost around sixty million lives. The Axis powers Germany, Italy and Japan faced the Allies, above all the USA, the Soviet Union and Britain. With the “Blitzkrieg” of tanks and aircraft, Adolf Hitler at first overran half of Europe. In 1941 the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor drew the USA into the war, and in the winter of 1942/43 the crushing German defeat at Stalingrad turned the tide on the Eastern Front. Among humanity's darkest chapters is the Holocaust: the Nazis murdered around six million Jews, and the camp of Auschwitz became the symbol of this crime. Statesmen such as Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Franklin D. Roosevelt forged the alliance against Hitler. On 6 June 1944, D-Day, the Allies landed in Normandy and opened the second front. On 8 May 1945 Germany surrendered unconditionally; in the Pacific, the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Japan to give up in September 1945. From the ruins a new world order arose: the United Nations were founded to prevent future world wars, Germany was divided into four occupation zones, and the world soon split into the two blocs of East and West: the beginning of the Cold War.
