September 2026

15 questions · Current events

September 2026 was a month of elections and for Germany's traditional parties a month of upheaval. On 6 September the AfD came first in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8 per cent. In Sweden the balance tipped too: the opposition led by Magdalena Andersson won a narrow majority and Prime Minister Kristersson resigned. Estonia's parliament elected Ülle Madise as president, and in Serbia Aleksandar Vučić stepped down as president to run for prime minister. In sport Kimi Antonelli made history at Monza as the first Italian since 1966 to win the Italian Grand Prix. Alexander Zverev won the US Open for his second Grand Slam title, Remco Evenepoel became world time trial champion for the fourth year running, and Manchester City were found guilty of 114 of 115 charges of breaching financial rules. Nairobi was awarded the 2029 World Athletics Championships: the first in Africa. In world politics the USA secured a bigger military presence in Greenland through an agreement with Denmark, while Swiss voters rejected a stricter form of neutrality. Science celebrated a newcomer: in Bolivia researchers described the tilcayo, the first new cat species in more than 100 years. Japan counted over 100,000 centenarians for the first time, and on 28 September SpaceX's Starship finally reached a stable orbit. The jazz world said goodbye to Cassandra Wilson, one of the great voices of her generation.
