Seti I

9 questions ยท History

Seti I ruled from about 1290 to 1279 BC and cleared up what the Amarna period had left behind. He secured the northern border against the Hittites, had the ruined temples restored and built one of Egypt's most beautiful temples at Abydos, with the famous king list naming 76 of his predecessors (the unwanted ones are missing). His own tomb in the Valley of the Kings is considered the most magnificent of all: over 100 metres deep and painted from top to bottom. More famous than he, however, was his son: Ramesses II. Good to know: Seti brought him into government early and prepared him systematically. Much of what made Ramesses famous had been started by his father. Abydos was held to be the burial place of Osiris and was a place of pilgrimage. Its reliefs are among the finest ever cut in stone. It names 76 predecessors and is a key source for Egyptian chronology. Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Hatshepsut are missing: they counted as unwanted. The Italian had been a circus strongman before becoming a pioneer excavator.
