Sif
12 questions · Mythology
Sif is the Norse goddess with the famous golden hair, wife of the thunder god Thor. Her shining hair is seen as a symbol of the ripe, golden fields of grain: so Sif is closely linked to fertility and harvest.
Her best-known myth begins with an outrage by Loki, who cut off her hair in her sleep. The furious Thor forced Loki to provide a replacement: the dwarves forged real, growing hair of gold and on the same occasion several of the gods' marvels, including Thor's hammer Mjölnir.
So Sif stands not only for fertility but, indirectly, for the making of Asgard's mightiest treasures.
Sif’s golden hair is famous; her son is Ullr, the god of skiing and archery.
Good to know: Sif's golden hair is read as an image of the ripe grain fields: a sign of fertility. When Loki cut off her hair, dwarves had to forge her new, growing hair out of real gold. Sif is the wife of the mighty thunder god Thor. The dwarves' task of remaking Sif's hair produced several marvels at once: among them Thor's hammer Mjölnir.
