Skaði is the Norse goddess (and giantess) of winter, mountains, hunting and skiing. With bow and skis she roams the snowy heights: an independent, warlike figure who came from the world of the giants to the gods. She appeared in full armour in Asgard to avenge her father's death. As atonement she was allowed to choose a god for a husband: but only by his feet. Hoping for the fair Baldr, she chose the fairest feet, but it was the sea god Njörðr. The marriage did not last, because neither would give up their home. Some derive the name „Scandinavia“ from Skaði. The wrathful giantess Skadi came to the gods to avenge her father’s death; only a crude joke by Loki made her laugh. From her husband Njörðr she parted because the two quarrelled over where to live.
