Squash: terms & technique
8 questions · Sports
Squash (terms & technique): In a 'boast' you hit the side wall first: often as a rescue from the back corner. Controlling the 'T' (the junction of the lines in the middle) lets you reach every ball fastest. The high time-buying ball is the lob. On obstruction there is a let.
The awarded point is a stroke. The hard attacking shot is the kill. With precise 'lengths' you push the opponent into the back corners: away from the T. All four walls may be used.
Good to know: The boast uses the side wall as a cushion: ideal for reaching the front wall from a corner. From the T you reach all four corners fastest: hold it and you control the game. A good lob sails over the opponent into the back corner. On accidental obstruction the rally is replayed as a 'let'. A 'stroke' gives the obstructed player the point outright. The kill aims low just above the tin: almost impossible to retrieve. Patient length play along the walls forces the opponent to the back: the basis of all squash tactics. Front, side and back walls are allowed: only the ceiling is not.
