Stephen Hawking

10 questions · Science

Stephen Hawking, born in Oxford in 1942, was the most famous physicist of his time: a thinker about the universe who also became a symbol of the power of the human mind over the body. As a young man in Cambridge he was diagnosed with ALS, an incurable nerve disease, and the doctors gave him only a few years. He lived more than half a century longer. Hawking studied the most extreme objects in the cosmos: black holes. His most famous discovery was that black holes, against all expectation, are not completely black but glow ever so faintly and can even evaporate over time: today called Hawking radiation. With it he linked gravity, quantum physics and thermodynamics for the first time. His book "A Brief History of Time" made the great questions of cosmology accessible to millions and became one of the best-selling non-fiction books of all time. The disease confined Hawking to a wheelchair and robbed him of his voice; in the end he communicated through a computer-controlled speech synthesiser whose synthetic voice became world-famous. In Cambridge he long held the Lucasian chair: once Newton's. He died in 2018, on 14 March, Einstein's birthday.
