“Crikey!”, with that cry, a khaki shirt and an infectious passion for anything that bites, scratches or carries venom, Steve Irwin became the best-known wildlife presenter of his generation. Born in Victoria in 1962, he grew up among snakes and lizards: his parents Bob and Lyn opened a small reptile park in Queensland, and as a teenager Steve was already helping to relocate crocodiles from rivers where they had become a danger to people. The reptile park grew into Australia Zoo, which Steve ran from 1991 with his wife Terri, an American from Oregon he had met when she visited the park. Even their honeymoon was work: the couple trapped crocodiles while a camera crew filmed and that footage became the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter in 1996. The series was soon shown in more than 130 countries and made Irwin a global star. Behind the showman stood a serious conservationist. With his father he discovered a species of turtle that now bears his name, and in 2002 he founded the organisation Wildlife Warriors. On 4 September 2006 Irwin died while filming on the Great Barrier Reef when a stingray's barb pierced his heart. His legacy lives on: his daughter Bindi and son Robert continue his work, the marine activists of Sea Shepherd named a ship after him, and every year on 15 November fans wear khaki for “Steve Irwin Day”.
