Stevie Wonder

13 questions · Music

Stevie Wonder from the USA was a prodigy: blind since early childhood, he signed with the legendary Motown label aged just eleven. The singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter shaped soul and funk and was among the early pioneers of the synthesizer. From his most mature phase comes the double album ‘Songs in the Key of Life’, often celebrated as a masterpiece. His hits range from the funky ‘Superstition’ through the tender father’s ode ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ and ‘Sir Duke’ to the world hit ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You’. Wonder was political too: with the song ‘Happy Birthday’ he successfully campaigned for a holiday honouring Martin Luther King. With Paul McCartney he sang the duet ‘Ebony and Ivory’. Good to know: Wonder has been blind since shortly after birth, yet he plays numerous instruments, from piano and harmonica to drums. ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ celebrates the birth of his daughter Aisha, and you can even hear her baby sounds in the song. ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ is still regarded as one of the greatest albums ever made.
