9 questions · History

Suleiman the Magnificent, born around 1494, led the Ottoman Empire to the height of its power. For 46 years (longer than any other sultan) he ruled an empire stretching from the Balkans through the Middle East to North Africa. In 1529 he even stood before the gates of Vienna. In the West he was called „the Magnificent“ for his splendour, in the East „the Lawgiver“ because he ordered the empire’s law. Under him art and architecture flourished. Good to know: Under him it was one of the most powerful forces in the world. His empire spanned three continents. The West marvelled at his splendour, the East honoured the ordering of law. Both names reflect the two sides of his rule. The siege failed against resistance and the approaching winter. Vienna marked the limit of Ottoman expansion into Central Europe. He brought the secular laws into a clear system. This strengthened the administration of the vast empire. In this time the empire experienced its golden age.
