Swimming: basics
8 questions · Sports
Swimming (basics): Front crawl is the fastest stroke; in 'freestyle' you may choose any stroke: in practice everyone swims crawl. The stroke on the back is backstroke. The frog-like stroke is breaststroke. The stroke with a dolphin kick is butterfly.
The Olympic 'long course' pool is 50 metres; 'short course' is 25 metres. In the medley the order is butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. The roll at the wall is the (tumble) turn. Four swimmers in turn make a relay.
Good to know: Front crawl is officially „freestyle“: any technique is allowed, but crawl is by far the fastest. Backstroke is the only stroke started from in the water, not off the block. Breaststroke is the slowest of the four racing strokes. Butterfly is considered the most exhausting of the four strokes. On the „short course“ (25 m) there are more turns and thus usually faster times than long course. In the individual medley the order is fixed: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle. In a tumble turn the swimmer somersaults underwater and pushes off with the feet.
