Taharqa ruled from about 690 to 664 BC and came not from Egypt but from Kush, in today's Sudan. The kings of the 25th Dynasty (often called the „Black Pharaohs“) conquered Egypt and expressly saw themselves as restorers of the old tradition: they built temples in New Kingdom style and had themselves buried in pyramids again, a form long out of fashion in Egypt by then. Taharqa's reign was the most brilliant of the dynasty but ended with the Assyrian invasion. He died in exile in Nubia and lies beneath a pyramid at Nuri. Good to know: The Kushite kings conquered Egypt from the south. Their capital Napata lay at the fourth cataract of the Nile. For some 60 years they ruled all of Egypt and Nubia together. The term comes from the 19th century, not from Egyptian sources. Their iron weapons and siege technology were superior. The Assyrians even sacked Thebes: a shock to the whole ancient world. In Egypt no royal pyramids had been built for some 800 years. The Kushite pyramids are smaller but far steeper than the Egyptian ones.
