The human body

20 questions ยท General knowledge

You carry it around your whole life and know remarkably little about it. This pack sorts out the essentials: which organ does what, how many bones there are, what the blood carries. Some of it runs against intuition. The skin is the body's largest organ: nearly two square metres and around ten kilograms, more than liver and brain combined. An adult has 206 bones, a newborn about 300; many fuse during childhood, and the sacrum alone forms from five separate vertebrae. The smallest bone sits in the middle ear, is called the stirrup and is under three millimetres long. The liver is the largest gland and the only internal organ that can grow back. And the heart beats around a hundred thousand times on a quiet day without anyone noticing: it only becomes conspicuous when it falls out of rhythm. Added to that are the words that appear in every doctor's letter and are rarely explained: diagnosis, prognosis, symptom, prevention. Knowing them apart makes findings and package inserts far easier to read and leaves less to guesswork when it matters. The cards come from the health packs of the app and share their learning progress.
