11 questions · Literature

Theodor Fontane (1819 to 1898) is the great storyteller of German Realism. In subtle novels of society such as „Effi Briest“ and „Der Stechlin“ he dissects the Prussian world of the 19th century: its marriages, conventions and quiet tragedies. Originally a pharmacist, he came to great prose late in life; his „Rambles through the March of Brandenburg“ remain famous. Good to know: Young Effi is destroyed by the rigid codes of honour of Prussian society. The novel is regarded as the German counterpart to „Madame Bovary“ and „Anna Karenina“. His subtle, ironic dialogue is seen as a high point of the era. His famous motto of composure runs: „That is a wide field.“ Only in his late fifties did he turn fully to writing novels. Before that he long worked as a journalist and theatre critic. The squire gives pears to children and keeps doing so beyond his death. The ballad is one of the best-known German poems of all. „At the end an old man dies and two young people marry“: so Fontane summed it up himself.
