Thomas Alva Edison, born in Ohio in 1847, was the prototype of the American inventor: not a lone genius but a tireless tinkerer and shrewd entrepreneur. As a child he was considered hard to teach and was schooled at home by his mother; as a youth he sold newspapers on trains and experimented in a makeshift laboratory. Edison filed over a thousand patents in his life: a record. Most famous is the practical light bulb: he did not invent electric light, but with a durable filament and a whole system of power station and wiring he made it usable in everyday life. From him also come the phonograph, which allowed sounds to be recorded and played back for the first time, and important contributions to early film. In Menlo Park he set up the world's first industrial research laboratory: the "invention factory", in which a team systematically developed new products. In the "War of Currents" Edison backed direct current and lost to Nikola Tesla's alternating current. From him comes the famous saying that genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration: hard work beats the flash of insight. Edison died in 1931 as one of the most famous people of his age.
