Thor is the Norse god of thunder, strength and protection: the most popular and beloved of all Viking gods. The red-haired, impetuous champion tirelessly defends gods and humans against the giants, enemies of order.
His chief weapon is the hammer Mjölnir, which returns to his hand after every throw and can shatter even mountains. He rides across the sky on a chariot drawn by two goats: every roll of its wheels makes the thunder rumble.
Thor is the son of Odin, good-natured and immensely strong, but easily provoked. Thursday is named after him. In the Roman interpretation he was linked to Jupiter, and in modern pop culture he became a comic and film hero.
At Ragnarök, the doom of the world, Thor meets his mortal enemy, the Midgard serpent and the two slay each other.
Good to know: Every ride of Thor's goat-drawn chariot makes the thunder roll, and he guards the world against the giants. He can slaughter and eat his goats and the next morning they come back to life. The hammer Mjölnir returns to Thor's hand after every throw and can shatter even mountains.
