TBE (short for tick-borne encephalitis) is, alongside Lyme disease, the second major tick-borne illness, but it differs from it fundamentally. While Lyme disease is caused by bacteria, TBE is a viral disease: the pathogen sits in the saliva of infected ticks and is transmitted at the bite itself, often without the person noticing the tiny tick. In many people the infection runs mild or even unnoticed. In some cases, however, after a symptom-free phase a second stage of the disease sets in, in which the virus inflames the meninges and sometimes the brain itself. Then high fever, severe headache, a stiff neck and, in serious cases, paralysis or lasting damage can threaten. There is no drug against the virus: one can only ease the symptoms. Unlike with Lyme disease, though, there is an effective vaccine against TBE, which is strongly recommended in the affected regions. TBE occurs only in certain risk areas, such as southern Germany, Austria and parts of Eastern Europe. Anyone who spends a lot of time in forest and meadow there should be vaccinated and additionally pay attention to tick protection.
