Tutankhamun

9 questions · History

Tutankhamun, who lived around 1330 BC, was a rather insignificant boy-pharaoh: yet became the most famous of all. The reason: his tomb in the Valley of the Kings remained almost untouched for over 3,000 years, until the archaeologist Howard Carter discovered it in 1922. The golden death mask and the thousands of treasures in the tomb sparked an Egypt craze worldwide. To this day the legend of the „curse of the pharaoh“ surrounds the discovery. Good to know: Almost all other royal tombs had long been plundered by robbers. Thus the insignificant pharaoh, of all people, became the most famous. Through a gap he glimpsed „wonderful things“ of gold. The discovery made him and the pharaoh world-famous. It shows the idealised face of the young king. The mask is one of the icons of ancient Egypt. He had become king already as a child. The exact cause of death is still not certain. After the death of the financier Lord Carnarvon, the press was electrified. Scientifically the „curse“ cannot be proven.
