Typhus (Spotted Fever)

10 questions · History

Typhus (epidemic or spotted fever) (not to be confused with typhoid, caused by salmonellae) is a dangerous bacterial disease inseparable from war, hunger and misery. It is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia prowazekii, spread by the body louse: the louse takes up the pathogen while feeding and excretes it in its faeces, which enter the skin through scratches. Because lice spread wherever many people live crammed together without hygiene, typhus raged above all in army camps, prisons, trenches and concentration camps: earning the grim names „camp fever“, „famine fever“ or „war plague“. Napoleon's Grande Armée lost more soldiers to typhus on the Russian campaign than to enemy weapons, and in the camps of the Second World War, such as Bergen-Belsen, countless people died of it. Typical are sudden high fever, severe headache, stupor and the namesake spotted rash. The Frenchman Charles Nicolle received the Nobel Prize for the insight that the louse is the carrier. Today typhus is easily treatable with antibiotics, and consistent hygiene and delousing prevent its spread.
