Týr is the Norse god of war, justice and oaths; the most honourable of the war gods. He embodies not blind slaughter but the just fight, the given word and the courage to do what is necessary. His most famous myth is the binding of the wolf Fenrir: because the wolf would only trust the gods if one laid a hand in his jaws as a pledge, Týr sacrificed that very hand. When the wolf saw through the trick, he bit down. Since that sacrifice Týr is one-handed and yet an emblem of courage and selflessness. Tuesday is named after him. Because the wolf Fenrir grew menacingly and seemed invincible, the brave Tyr sacrificed his hand while it was bound. His name is very ancient and related to ‘Zeus’, the Týr rune (Tiwaz) is named after him, and at Ragnarök he fights the hound Garmr.
