Unicorn

12 questions · Mythology

The unicorn is a horse-like mythical creature with a single, spirally twisted horn on its forehead. It is considered shy, noble and pure: a symbol of innocence, grace and the unattainable. Ancient authors already reported a wild unicorn in distant lands. In the Middle Ages it became a symbol of purity: legend said the wild animal could be tamed only by a maiden. Its horn was thought to be a miracle cure against poison and disease. To this day the unicorn is one of the most beloved mythical creatures: from a medieval heraldic beast to a symbol of modern pop culture. The unicorn also reached the West by way of translation: the biblical wild ox “re'em” became the Greek “monokeros”. What princes bought as precious “ainkhürn” was in truth the narwhal's spiral tusk; pharmacies carried the wonder cure in their names. Art wove the Lady and the Unicorn in silk, Scotland chained it into its coat of arms and today the financial world names billion-dollar startups after the shy beast. What starts as plain knowledge quickly becomes one aha moment after another.
