Usedom

6 questions · Geography

Usedom is, after Rügen, the second-largest island in Germany and lies in the Baltic Sea on the border with Poland. The eastern part with the town of Świnoujście belongs to Poland, the larger western part to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Usedom is nicknamed the ‚sunshine island‘ because it is among the sunniest regions in Germany. Famous are the three imperial spas of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin with their grand resort architecture and long piers. In the north lies Peenemünde, where under the Nazi regime the first large rocket was developed during the Second World War: a place of dark significance in the history of technology. Good to know: Only Rügen is larger. The Polish town of Świnoujście (Swinemünde) lies on Usedom. Usedom is regularly among the sunniest places in Germany. Ahlbeck's pier is the oldest surviving one in Germany. Here the first working large rocket (the ‚A4/V2‘) was built. For its many hours of sunshine, Usedom is also called „the Sun Island.“ The eastern part is Polish.
