Vasco da Gama

10 questions · History

Vasco da Gama, born around 1469 in Portugal, was the seafarer who first found a continuous sea route from Europe to India. Portugal was then feverishly seeking its own way to the precious spices of Asia, without the overland trade controlled by Arabs and Venetians. In 1498 da Gama achieved what no one had managed before: he rounded the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa and reached the west coast of India. This flung open the door to a lucrative sea trade that made Portugal rich and powerful for a century. His voyage is regarded as one of the most important in the history of exploration.
