Vesta

12 questions ยท Mythology

Vesta is the Roman goddess of the hearth and keeper of the state hearth. In her round temple on the Forum Romanum burned the sacred fire of Rome, which was never allowed to go out; it was seen as a symbol of the very survival of the state. The fire was tended by the Vestal Virgins, six chosen priestesses who lived in strict chastity. They enjoyed high honours: but a Vestal who broke her vow faced being buried alive. Vesta corresponds to the Greek Hestia. Because she remained so impersonal (the pure fire itself) she was rarely depicted in human form. The priestesses of Vesta, the Vestal Virgins, guarded the eternal hearth fire and the Palladium, a sacred pledge of Rome. Good to know: Vesta tends the sacred fire, which stood for the very survival of Rome. If her fire went out, it was seen as a grave omen for the whole state. The Vestal Virgins, chosen priestesses, guarded the fire and lived in strict chastity. If a Vestal broke her vow of chastity, she faced being buried alive. In Greece, Vesta corresponds to the hearth goddess Hestia.
