The Vietnam War (roughly 1955 to 1975) was one of the most formative and controversial conflicts of the Cold War. It was preceded by the Indochina War, in which France was defeated at Dien Bien Phu in 1954: after which Vietnam was divided. Now communist North Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh fought the Western-backed South, into which the USA became ever more deeply drawn; the “domino theory” made them fear that all of Southeast Asia might fall to communism. But the Viet Cong eluded superior US firepower as guerrillas, supplied via the secret Ho Chi Minh Trail and hidden in the dense jungle. The incendiary weapon napalm and the defoliant Agent Orange became notorious. In 1968 the surprise Tet Offensive shook belief in a US victory. As the first “living-room war”, Vietnam was broadcast daily on television: the images fuelled a protest and peace movement worldwide. Under President Richard Nixon the USA gradually withdrew (“Vietnamization”). In 1975 Saigon fell, the North won, and Vietnam was reunified under communist rule. Several million Vietnamese and around 58,000 US soldiers had lost their lives; in the USA the war split society deeply and left a “Vietnam trauma” that echoes to this day.
