Volleyball looks simple (keep the ball off the floor on your side and put it on the floor on theirs) but the rules give it a rhythm all of its own. Each team has 6 players on court, and after winning back the serve they rotate one position clockwise. Every rally starts with the serve; a hard jump serve can put the opponents under pressure straight away, and one that cannot be returned at all wins an ace. A team may touch the ball no more than three times per attack, and the classic sequence is pass, set, attack. The setter is the playmaker who decides in a flash which attacker gets the ball, and the attack itself is the spike, a hard overhead hit out of a jump that can travel well over 100 km/h. At the net the opponents answer with the block, sending the ball straight back or slowing it down for the defence. Behind them stands the libero, the defensive specialist in a different-coloured shirt who may sub in and out freely but is not allowed to attack or serve. The scoring keeps matches tense. A normal set is played to 25 points, but it must be won by two clear points, so at 24-24 play simply carries on. To win a match a team needs three sets, and if it goes the distance the fifth set, the tie-break, is played only to 15: still with a two-point margin. The net hangs at 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women, which is why almost every attack and block happens in the air. On sand the game changes completely. In beach volleyball there are only two players per team, with no rotation and no libero, so both have to do everything and since 1996 the discipline has been part of the Olympic Games.

Libero
