Volleyball legends
7 questions · Sports
Volleyball has produced figures known far beyond their sport, and the seven in this pack cover the indoor court and the beach, four continents and several generations. Karch Kiraly, the son of a doctor who had fled Hungary and taught him the game on the beaches of California, is the only player to win Olympic gold both indoors and on the beach; as a coach he later led the US women's team to gold. In 2001 the world federation FIVB honoured him, together with Italy's Lorenzo Bernardi, as player of the century: Bernardi had dominated the 1990s with Italy's “Generation of Phenomena”.
Brazil's Giba, in full Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho, was the heart of the team that won almost everything in the 2000s, including Olympic gold in Athens in 2004. Cuba's Regla Torres won her first Olympic gold at just 17 and went on to win three in a row, from 1992 to 2000; the FIVB named her the best female player of the 20th century. China's Lang Ping, nicknamed the “Iron Hammer” for her fierce spikes, became Olympic champion as a player in 1984 and again as a coach in 2016.
And on the sand, Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor made history: as a pair they won Olympic gold three times in a row, in 2004, 2008 and 2012, dropping just a single set in Olympic play along the way.
