Werewolf

12 questions · Mythology

The werewolf is a human who transforms (usually at the full moon) into a wolf or a wolf-like monster. Belief in such shape-shifters is ancient and found in many cultures around the world. Greek legend already knows King Lycaon, whom Zeus turned into a wolf as punishment: hence the technical term „lycanthropy“ for turning into a wolf. In European folklore the werewolf was a bloodthirsty beast. In the Middle Ages real people were persecuted as alleged werewolves. Later pop culture created the familiar rules: transformation at the full moon and vulnerability to silver. The word itself gives the formula away: “were” is the old word for man: the man-wolf. The earliest tale already appears in Petronius's Satyricon, and in the 16th century the belief turned deadly serious: the “Werewolf of Bedburg”, Peter Stubbe, ended on the wheel in 1589, allegedly transformed by a devilish wolf belt. Medicine knows the delusion as lycanthropy. The silver bullet and full moon come largely from Hollywood, above all “The Wolf Man” of 1941.
