Winston Churchill

10 questions ยท History

Winston Churchill, born in 1874, was a British statesman, author and probably the most famous prime minister in his country's history. In the darkest hours of the Second World War he became the symbolic figure of resistance. When Germany was winning victory after victory in 1940 and Britain stood alone, Churchill took over the government. With unbending will and stirring speeches (he promised only "blood, toil, tears and sweat") he kept up his people's morale and led them, alongside the Allies, to victory over Nazi Germany. Churchill was also a gifted writer and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. He remained politically active into old age and died in 1965. Good to know: Churchill led Britain as prime minister through the Second World War. In the darkest hour of 1940, Churchill sustained British resistance against Nazi Germany. His defiant speeches (โ€žblood, toil, tears and sweatโ€œ) gave a whole nation courage. With almost all of Europe fallen, Churchill in 1940 embodied the resolve never to surrender.
