World Religions: Basics

15 questions · Religion & Belief

Since the dawn of humankind people have searched for answers to the great questions: where do we come from, how should we live, what happens after death? Out of that search the world's religions have grown over the millennia, with sacred scriptures, rituals and communities in which billions of people today find meaning, comfort and belonging. Some worship a single god, others a whole pantheon, and some manage almost without gods at all. This pack gives an overview of the world's faiths: recognise Judaism as the oldest of the three great scriptural religions, Christianity as the largest religion of the present day and Islam as the youngest of the three, Buddhism with its path to enlightenment and the many-sided Hinduism, Sikhism, the strict Jainism, the Chinese Taoism and Confucianism, the ancient Persian Zoroastrianism, the Japanese Shinto with its countless nature spirits and the young Baha'i Faith, plus the basic concepts of monotheism for belief in one god, polytheism for belief in many gods, and the Abrahamic religions, which all trace themselves back to the patriarch Abraham: recognise them by their features and their history.
