Yellow Fever

10 questions · History

Yellow fever is a dangerous, mosquito-borne viral disease of the tropics and subtropics. It owes its name to the yellowing of skin and eyes, the jaundice that appears in severe cases when the virus damages the liver. The pathogen is spread mainly by the mosquito Aedes aegypti: the same species that also carries dengue and Zika viruses. Through the slave trade yellow fever reached the New World from Africa, where it caused devastating epidemics in the port cities of the Americas and made whole campaigns and construction projects fail. The work of the US doctor Walter Reed became famous; around 1900 in Cuba he proved that mosquitoes (and not bad air) transmit the disease. This insight first made it possible, through targeted mosquito control, to complete the building of the Panama Canal, where thousands had died before. Unlike with many other diseases, there is a highly effective vaccine against yellow fever that protects for life and is often required for travel to affected countries. Even so, the disease still claims tens of thousands of lives in Africa and South America today.
