Yggdrasil

12 questions · Mythology

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is the mighty world ash, whose branches and roots connect and hold together all nine worlds. It is the centre of the cosmos: at its foot the gods hold council, an eagle sits in its crown, a squirrel darts up and down its trunk, and the dragon Níðhöggr gnaws at its roots. Yggdrasil embodies the order and interconnection of all creation. At its foot lies the well of wisdom, for whose water Odin sacrificed an eye. Yggdrasil is an entire ecosystem of myth: in the crown sits an eagle with the hawk Vedrfölnir between its eyes; at the roots gnaws the dragon Nidhögg, and the squirrel Ratatoskr runs up and down the trunk carrying insults between the two. Four stags browse its shoots, and yet the tree stays green: tended by the Norns Urd, Verdandi and Skuld, who water it daily with water and white clay and spin fate at the Well of Urd. The name probably means “steed of the terrible one”, that is, Odin's horse: a dark allusion, for gallows were called “horses” and Odin hung himself on the tree for nine wounded nights to behold the runes. The world ash even survives Ragnarök: hidden in its trunk, Lif and Lifthrasir live on and people the new world.
