If you know yoga only by hearsay you may picture quiet sitting: yet much of the practice is decided on your feet. This pack gathers eighteen postures built around standing and balance, from the calm to the acrobatic. It opens with the fine variations of Mountain Pose: palms in prayer at the chest or (far more demanding) folded behind the back into Reverse Prayer. Then things get wobblier: a knee hugs up to the chin, the torso twists on one leg with the hands still in prayer, the Standing Frog lifts one bent leg, and the Toppling Tree leans level to the front until a single leg carries everything. Sugarcane Pose bends the caught foot into a bow out of Half Moon, the Standing Split sends one leg straight toward the ceiling, and with Durvasasana (a leg behind the head while standing upright) one of yoga's most spectacular balances says hello. Add the deep Standing Forward Bend, standing backbends with bound arms, Locust and Cobra in their standing versions and the wide Kali Squat. The common English name is the answer we look for; where a familiar Sanskrit name exists, it counts as an alias too.
