Zendaya
10 questions ยท Society & Everyday
Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman is born in Oakland, California, in 1996. Her first name means something like "to give thanks" in the Shona language. As a child she performs at her mother's theatre, works as a model and dancer and, as a teenager, becomes known on the Disney Channel: a classic start that many careers never grow beyond. Zendaya does exactly that.
She makes the leap to serious actress with the HBO series 'Euphoria', in which she plays a drug-addicted teenager. For that role she wins, in 2020, the Emmy for lead actress in a drama series as the youngest winner ever and later repeats the feat. At the same time, blockbusters make her a global star: as MJ in the 'Spider-Man' films and as Chani in Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune'.
Beyond acting, Zendaya is a celebrated style icon. On red carpets she makes bold fashion statements with her long-time stylist and is regarded as one of the most influential fashion figures of her generation. She also speaks out on social issues such as diversity and representation in Hollywood.
Still only in her mid-twenties, Zendaya has already achieved what many actresses dream of for a lifetime: critical acclaim, commercial success and the freedom to choose her own projects. She stands for a young generation rising from child star to serious cinema and cultural phenomenon.
