Zheng He, born in 1371, was a Chinese admiral of the Ming dynasty and one of the greatest seafarers in history. In the early 15th century (decades before the European explorers) he led enormous "treasure fleets" across the oceans on the emperor's behalf. His fleets were unimaginably large for the time: hundreds of ships and tens of thousands of people. The largest ships are said to have dwarfed the European caravels many times over. Zheng He sailed as far as Southeast Asia, India, Arabia and the east coast of Africa, forging trade ties and demonstrating China's power. After his death around 1433 China ended the great voyages and turned inward. Zheng He remained a legendary figure.
