Zika fever was long barely noticed: until an epidemic in Latin America alarmed the world. It is caused by the Zika virus, closely related to the dengue and yellow fever viruses and spread mainly by the day-active Aedes mosquito. Unlike many feared pathogens, a Zika infection runs mild or even entirely symptomless in most people; those who fall ill often have only slight fever, a rash, joint pain and red eyes. The real danger showed itself, however, when the virus spread explosively in Brazil in 2015 and 2016: among the children of women infected during pregnancy, severe malformations of the brain piled up, above all microcephaly: too small a head. Zika thus became the first mosquito-borne disease shown to cause birth defects. The virus can also, in rare cases, attack the nervous system. A special feature is that Zika can also be transmitted sexually. A specific drug or an approved vaccine is still lacking; the best protection is mosquito control and advising pregnant women to avoid outbreak areas. The virus is named after the Zika forest in Uganda, where it was discovered in 1947.
