Zinédine Zidane, born in Marseille in 1972 to Algerian immigrants, grew up in a modest neighbourhood and became the most elegant midfielder of his generation. Despite his size he moved with a dancer's grace; his ball control and vision were considered almost unmatched. His greatest moment came in 1998: in the World Cup final on home soil, "Zizou" headed two goals to make France world champions. Two years later he also led the Équipe tricolore to the European title. At club level he crowned his time at Real Madrid in 2002 with one of the finest goals in history: a perfect volley in the Champions League final. His last match is unforgettable for another reason: in the 2006 World Cup final Zidane headbutted the Italian Materazzi after a provocation and was sent off: a tragic end to a glittering career. As a coach he went one better: with Real Madrid he won the Champions League three years in a row: an unprecedented feat. Zidane was voted World Player of the Year and remains an icon of the elegant game.
